Men's Access to Emergency Contraception

The impact of emergency contraception (EC) on rates of unintended pregnancy has been limited, with possible explanations being related to the lack of correct and consistent use with every episode of unprotected intercourse around the time of ovulation. Increasing the male partner’s awareness of EC and empowering them to discuss and purchase EC may be valuable for improving the impact of EC. However, we are concerned that some men in LA County may not be able to obtain EC from the pharmacy when they desire. We are therefore conducting a survey of pharmacies to examine EC availability and any concerns related to male partner purchase of EC.
